SINGAPORE: A rat infestation has been discovered in Bedok Reservoir housing estate, with over 10 rat holes found in just three months.
Each hole can reportedly contain up to 30 rodents.
Hence, any burrows that are discovered are quickly sealed up with rocks and soil, while drainage holes are capped with metal covers that can withstand a rat's bite.
Residents of blocks 604, 608, 612 and 618 said the problem started last October, and they believe a rubbish dump is the cause.
Aljunied Town Counil, which oversees the area, said it is working with pest control companies and will lay baits around the affected blocks.

Cats and rats
Thanks to yskat for sending this. One of the misconceptions about cats is that they need to hunt and kill rats whereas from what I've observed, the presence of cats is enough to be a deterrent. Of course, there are some areas where there are cats and rats in the same vicinity. Desmond Morris mentioned in his seminal book, Catwatching that the rats need to be below a certain size for cats to be able to hunt - or I suspect, even intimidate them.Eliminate the cats - and rats are likely going to follow.
