Rest in peace, Meow Meow

http://www.facebook.com/notes/yingzhi-lin/rest-in-peace-meow-meow/207215685972812

by Yingzhi Lin on Monday, 04 April 2011 at 12:45

This sweet little cat passed away recently from a car accident. She left 5 beautiful kittens behind, which are all less than 2 week old when she left the world. But they are in the good hands of an experienced fosterer, thanks to her very kind caregivers and their equally kind friends. The kittens will be up for adoption once they can eat solid food.

I started on the sterilization project at my workplace a few months back, with the help of Guardian of Pets. Meow Meow was already pregnant then, so I planned to bring her for sterilization after helping to rehome her kittens. She was very shy initially, but slowly, she allowed me to befriend her. She was such a beautiful cat, her coat was soft and lustrous and she looked absolutely healthy. I suspected she must have been very well taken care of by some others in the area. I found out that indeed, along with the security personnel, some of the people from the ground floor companies have been feeding her good food regularly. One of the companies, Vividthree, even built her nice little abode, hoping she will have a little roof over her head, and perhaps the heads of her little ones when they are born. Meow Meow was the name that the good folks of Vividthree had given her.

Meow Meow delighted all of us, when she did give birth to her litter of 5 in the box-home. All seemed to be going well. I was just hoping and hoping that the 5 will grow up safely in this dangerous industrial area before rehoming them, and then bring Meow Meow for snip-snip. Her mother (white cat with ginger patches in the pics) was already sterilized and released, and her next-gen sister (calico kitten in the pics) is at Guardian of Pets now, up for adoption too.

But the lives of strays are never easy. No matter how much you are loved and cared for. The roads are dangerous, and while there are kind souls around who feed and care for them, there is always the risk of unkind beasts who may inflict abuse on these poor strays, or callous people who will just call AVA, TC or SPCA to complain, leading the strays to certain death (Once they are caught by AVA or SPCA, if unclaimed, death awaits them). The best that caregivers who are unable to adopt them can do is to sterilize them, feed them well and look out for them as much as we can as they roam the streets which they call home. So really, no matter how much a stray is loved and cared for, they remain as strays on the run and their fates are extremely fragile. I've always known this, but it hit me acutely again on the fateful day Meow Meow left the world. Even though the driver rushed her to the vet afterwards, she couldn't make it. Still, kudos to the driver for doing what so many others will not do. He made a last-ditch effort to save her life.

As I look through the pics of Meow Meow, the pangs hit me hard. And my heart aches for the strays I care for under my block. Lives of strays are so fragile and unpredictable...

I would like to remember Meow Meow in her best moments, so this is a tribute to her. Meow Meow, who gave many people much joy in her straying wandering short life. There are moments of her playing, of her nom-nom sessions with her mommy and sister, of her loving her few-day-old babies, and of her just being her gorgeous sweet little self.

Rest in peace, Meow Meow. Your babies are in good hands. Watch over your little ones and let them go to good and loving homes.

Always a vocal sweetie once you gained her trust.
A very preggie Meow Meow with her Mommy at the back. (I call her Peaches)
Once she trusted you, she became super affectionate...
One of my fav shot of her...
Chow-time with mommy (Peaches) and calico baby-sis (彩虹 Rainbow). These 3 are the gentlest cats. Mommy Peaches was still very friendly towards Meow Meow and kinda looks out for her (she will let Meow Meow eat her share if Meow Meow insists!) when she was nursing Rainbow, and Meow Meow didn't attack Rainbow either even tho 2 of them are from different litters.
The nice crib that Vividthree folks built for Meow Meow, also named endearingly VividCAT by them.
Loving her babies in her mini-cattery...

Chandra: A man with a Kind Heart

From Morna
"Occasionally I would meet this cheery, middle-aged Indian man(Chandra) during my early morning feeding at Blk X19. We would talk and he would feedback to me things about the cats e.g. the cleaner hitting Little Poeny etc. He's a resident of the block and will bring down any leftover dinner for the cats below. Whenever I went away, he & his wife would volunteer to feed Little Poeny for me. For the last few weeks, I've this uneasy feeling that this man is no longer existing as I've not seen him for sometime. Tried to brush away the thought but it keep recurring which I don't know why. Finally I tried to ask around ytd but to no avail. However, this morning while checking with a resident in the same block, I was told Chandra has passed away suddenly last month due to a heart attack. Sad.. but I'm confident that with his cheery disposition and kindness, this man is on the way to a better realm and now I understand why I've this uneasy feeling; Chandra wants me to tell Little Poeny that he's gone :("

Story of "Flower" The Calico

Hi

I thought you may be interested to read my blog on the story of my adopted cat, "Flower" The Calico.

She was rescued from a drain at Upper Thomson Road last year, and is now a member of our family, together with another senior cat.

The Incredible Journey of Jane-jane and the danger of "upstairs" Irresponsible Feeding!

From a caregiver called M

"During one of my morning feedings somewhere in Sept’09 (not too sure), a Blangadesh cleaner that used to be quite nice approached me and told me to help a very thin cat that fed on dried tea leaves left outside residents’ house for prayers, at the upstairs corridor of Blk **9.

Many residents made complaints to the TC who then alerted the cleaning supervisor and H.

The cleaner told me that he had tried removing the cat a few times to other blocks but it came back after a few days so I made a trip up the block to see what I can do and true enough, there was a thin, female, golden colour, unsterilised cat on the 10th floor.

I alerted H and she later brought the cat for sterilisation and released it a block away.

Unfortunately after 3 days, this cat managed to find its way back to the upstairs corridor of block **9 and the complaints started again.

I told the cleaner to give me some time so that I can lure the cat down slowly by my daily feeding.

After 2 weeks of feeding, I succeeded to lure it down from the 10th floor to 8th floor …until it stayed on the 5th and 3rd floor.

If given another 1-2 weeks, I should manage to bring the cat down the block but before that can happen, it disappeared.

I asked the same cleaner but he just said no idea where the cat is but a month later while talking to a resident, I discovered that he was the one that had trapped the cat and relocated it to a far place.

I informed H and both of us made a trip to see the cleaning supervisor and after several hush hush… the cleaner admitted that he had relocated the cat next to a camp and we made them showed us the exact location.

It was along Sembawang Road opposite Khatib camp, very far from block **9.

I have made several trips seaching for the poor cat but no sign of her.

The funny thing is three months after the relocation, the same cleaner came running to me one morning and said that the same cat came back and now she’s at the upstairs corridors of block **9 again. He said residents were complaining again and he had informed H. I went up the block immediately and true enough the same cat was there but she had wounds all over the body and she was almost ‘botak’ covered with not much fur.

I really felt sore at the sight as she was such a pretty cat with thick golden fur before.

Without much hesitation, I brought it home to avoid being relocated again.

Brought her to a vet, and upon examination, we believed that her wounds were inflicted by barb wires and attacks by other cats and treatment was given.

After 5 months of TLC, she’s a happy cat now in my house and her fur has started to grow back and we have named her Jane Jane after my late dog as she has beautiful big eyes like her. "

Incredible bond between a lady and a stray dog

Billy

Kiki

2005: Linda took pity of two stray dogs (mongrels) in her neighbourhood in Woodlands and started to give them food. Soon it became a routine for the dogs to wait for her at the void deck. Linda named them Billy and KiKi.

As mongrels are not on the list of pedigrees approved for living in HDB flats, these two dogs, although well behaved and quiet, could not be taken in by Linda into her flat.

Then someone complaint to AVA and the dog catchers came to round up the dogs. The male dog, named Billy, was caught but was injured during the rough handling by the dog catchers. The female dog escaped.

Linda rushed to AVA upon hearing the terrible news and took Billy out. With the help of a pet taxi chap, Billy was transported in a van to a factory in Sungei Kadut. While putting up a partition on a doorway of a factory, Billy escaped. Linda and the pet taxi chap searched high and low. After about an hour, Linda felt that perhaps Billy has returned to her block in Woodlands. She phoned her neighbour to check the void deck where she used to feed Billy. The neighbour said it was impossible for a dog to find his way back over such a distance and furthermore the dog was injured and limping. Linda insisted that her neighbour take a look. The neighbour looked out of the window and lor and behold, Billy was at the void deck! How did he find his way within an hour and with an injured limb?! Linda said Billy couldn't have look out of the van to see where he was going!

Linda found Kiki in the neighbourhood and took her in.

As mongrels are not allowed in HDB flats, Billy and Kiki are now boarded in a shelter.

Ironically a private apartment, even if it were smaller than a HDB flat, can accomodate mongrels.

How Billy found his way "home" will always be a mystery.

However the power of love, even between that of a human and a dog, is no mystery.

17-01-2010, 3:36pm, sms from Linda
"I'm not sure (of the distance Billy travalled) but by car, from Sungei Kadut to Woodlands is about 15 minutes. It's quite deep in the factory area. We brought him there about 7.30pm. He was found lying on my void deck about 9.30pm. He mouth was still bleeding One hind leg limping and bleeding. He was in this physical state when I claimed him from the AVA."

The Story of Wednesday

Sent: Saturday, January 09, 2010 4:06 PM
Subject: The story of Wednesday

Dear friends

I would like to share with you the story of Wednesday the cat.

I call him Wednesday as I found him on 6 Jan 2010, a Wednesday, near Blk 690 Jurong West Central area.

He was lying under a bench in a darkly lit corner by a path taken by many people to and from work everyday.
That fateful night, I caught sight of Wednesday, a black cat, lying motionless and staring into the blank space before him.

I called him softly. Wednesday did not respond.
He wore a collar, and looked very tame.
I noticed his thighs and legs were covered in crusty, sticky slime, and thought it was dried mud or soil.
I gave Wednesday some kibble but he did not eat any.
I took out a tissue and started to clean him. As I cleaned, I realised it was poo and urine that he was soaked in. A lot of it.

When I rubbed harder, Wednesday let out a cry, telling me it was painful.
It was useless, there was too much poo and pee on him to clean properly.

I nudged Wednesday to see if he could move. He did not no matter how I tried.
It was too dark for me to see what I was wrong with him. But it was obvious he was very sick.

I decided to go home 1st. As I walked off, Wednesday lied there silently. He did not look at me but just stared into space just like I found him. There was an uncomfortable sadness in his eyes. A pain and hopelessness that I could not forget.
I knew if I ignored him and walked off like that, Wednesday would simply sit there and wait for death to claim him.

So I went home, got my carrier, and came back with my mum again.
As my mum gently lifted Wednesday into the carrier, I saw a tube sticking out from his penis.
I pulled it out. It was about 10cm long.
Later we found out it was a urinary catheter.

We rushed Wednesday to the vet in a cab.
The smell in the cab was so bad, the cabbie had to wind down his windows.
Wednesday was literally rotting.

At the vet, I could see the plight of Wednesday clearly.
The lower half of his body was soaked in poo and pee for an extended time. The acidic urine had literally 'burned' his fur and skin.
His testicles were swollen and infected.
His front right leg was shaved, a sign that he could have had an injection or put on drip before.
The sight was hard to endure, the stench unbearable, and the pain unspeakable.
I took pictures of him (pls see attachments).

It was plain to see that Wednesday was suffering.

Wednesday was hospitalised and had to be cleaned gradually as it was too much pain for him.

7 Jan morning. It was pouring heavily on my way to work.
I couldn't imagine how it would be like for Wednesday if he was still lying under the bench where I found him.

The clinic cleaned up Wednesday and found serious infections on his skin due to the urine burns.
Wednesday was badly dehydrated and had to be put on drip.
He would not eat and must be force-fed.

8 Jan late morning. The vet called to say that Wednesday had 'crashed' twice.
They had to resuscitate him to keep him alive. He was slipping into a coma and unable to register anything.

The blood test showed that his white blood count was too low, a mere 0.7 out of a normal 5.5.
There weren't enough white blood cells to fight off the infection in his blood.

From the extent of the urine burns, Wednesday had likely been lying in his poo and pee for about 10 days.
The urine catheter inserted in his penis (could be treatment for urinary track infection or bladder problem) had introduced bacteria into his body.

The vet prepared me for the worst. The 3rd crash might come very soon, and it was perhaps better to let him go than prolong his agony. Minutes before noon, Wednesay passed away. He was estimated to be about 4 to 5 years old.

I saw Wednesday for the last time and ask that he be cremated.
It was difficult to fight back the tears.
At least now, Wednesday has left this suffering body and is no longer in pain.
I hope he had felt peace in his dying moments.

And if it is meant to be, I hope this story reaches the owners of Wednesday, so they know how much Wednesday suffered.
I do not know if Wednesday had strayed from home and ended up in the streets, or was deliberately left to die out there for he was too much trouble.

I guess only Wednesday and his owners know the truth.

Regards
HG
