WE REFER to the letter 'Alpine dog breed... not suitable for our tropical climate' by reader Tan Chek Wee (The New Paper, July 7). While the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) does not encourage the keeping of thick-coated dogs such as the St Bernard in a warm climate, we also recognise that it is possible to keep such dogs in Singapore as long as owners can meet their needs and provide adequate grooming, exercise and a cool environment to maintain their well-being. Inadequate knowledge on the care and responsibilities that come with owning a pet is often the main reason for owners to give up their pets. As such, banning certain types or breeds of pets may not necessarily address the problem of pet abandonment. AVA, instead, advocates responsible pet ownership. The decision to own a pet must come with the commitment to care for the pet for life. Such decisions should be made only after fully understanding the special needs of different pet breeds, and the care and responsibilities involved in ensuring their well-being. Abandoning pets when they grow old and sick, or when issues such as family objections, time or financial constraints crop up, should never be an option. We urge the public to consider carefully before acquiring a pet and not to buy a pet on impulse.
