From:
I read with dismay MUIS (Singapore Muslim Board) website that it is okay to give away your unwanted pets to SPCA and had it put to sleep animals in SPCA.
The MUIS website mentioned that "one should instead focus on strengthening family ties and relations. If the existence of a pet may effect this effort, then there is nothing wrong with giving it away to an institution responsible for animal welfare such as the SPCA or even to another person to take care of it. It is also permissible to inject it and putting it to sleep as long as it does not bring great cruelty towards it".
No wonder I heard all sorts of excuses from irresponsible Malay/Muslim cat owners when they give away their cats to SPCA without any qualms that their cats will be put to sleep in SPCA as MUIS mentioned it is okay to give your unwanted cats to SPCA and permissible to put to sleep. The reason the Malay/Muslim cat owners often gave when they giving away their pet cat to SPCA is due to personal or family problem they unable to keep the cat anymore - a member of the family don't want the cat in the home, or a new-born baby in the family or asthma related problem, or they having too many cats in the house they can't cope with their cats or financial problems -- why in the first place they keep bringing in more cats or some refused to sterilise their cats and let it breed --then later they simply surrender their cats to SPCA.
MUIS should promote responsible pet ownership, keeping pets is for life and we cannot simply abandoned it instead of mentioning in their website it is okay to give your unwanted cats to SPCA. No wonder SPCA is flooded with unwanted cats often brought in by Malay/Muslim cat owners since MUIS said it is okay to surrender your unwanted pets to SPCA.
None of the Malays/Muslims who brought in their cats have any qualms or regrets about their cats lives shortened - put to sleep in SPCA.
MUIS should work closely with AVA and SPCA in their pet responsibility "a pet is for life" campaign. Aren't MUIS aware of AVA and SPCA often held regular Pet Responsibility exhibitions?
In Islam - It is Wajib (necessary) upon every individual owning animals to spend on them, providing food and everything else required for their good up keep.
It is a duty upon every human being to respect Allah’s creation. If we ill treat any of His creation, we will be questioned about it on the Day of Judgment.
Quote from holy Prophet Muhammad "Fear Allah in your ill treatment of animals."

4. Question: Is it permissible for one to give away one’s pet to the SPCA as one cannot afford to keep the pet anymore? Answer: | |
Muslims are not obliged to to keep pets except when it needs to be sheltered and protected temporarily in cases where it may be injured or hurt if one does not take it in. One should instead focus on strengthening family ties and relations. If the existence of a pet may effect this effort, then there is nothing wrong with giving it away to an institution responsible for animal welfare such as the SPCA or even to another person to take care of it. It is also permissible to inject it and putting it to sleep as long as it does not bring great cruelty towards it. ------------ Please email MUIS - tell them stop putting irresponsible pet ownership messages in their website I already email MUIS, nonetheless the more writing in the better. And I already email SPCA, AVA, Cat Welfare Society, Noah's Ark, Animal Lovers League - informing on this matter. |
