THE Agri-food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has set up a new animal welfare and education resource centre to organise and support activities that promote responsible pet ownership among schools and the public. Located at AVA’s Centre for Animal Welfare and Control (CAWC) at 75 Pasir Panjang Road, the resource centre comprises a newly furnished poster gallery, library and seminar room.
Visitors to CAWC can now learn more about pet care and animal welfare issues through informative posters in the poster gallery. Topics on display include dog licensing regulations, expected lifespan of common pets, advice on pet needs and spaying/neutering of pets as a healthy alternative to unwanted litters, to name a few.
The poster gallery also provides information on the Stray Cat Rehabilitation Scheme, a scheme recognised by animal welfare organisations as the most humane and effective method for long-term control of stray cats.
Pet owners and interested parties can also visit the CAWC library, which currently houses more than 200 books and journals on general pet care, animal welfare, wildlife and veterinary science. Magazines from overseas animal welfare organisations such as the Humane Society of the United States, Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Universities Federation for Animal Welfare are also available in the library. Members of the public who want to make use of the library resources can make an appointment with CAWC officers.
As part of its responsible pet ownership educational programme, AVA officers conduct educational talks at CAWC in which shools are invited to participate.
