On stray cats
AVA did not collect cats
11 January 2009
I REFER to the letter 'Why put sterilised stray cat to sleep?' (The New Paper, 9 Jan). The writer had also written to the SPCA on this matter.
We have made enquiries with the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) and were informed that there were no cats collected by the AVA from Ang Mo Kio in December.
The SPCA agrees with the writer that stray sterilised cats should not be put to sleep. They should be able to remain in the environment to live out their lives.
The SPCA does not accept sterilised stray cats unless they are injured, sick and unable to survive.
As to Ms Shoba's observations that some cats appear to have been abused or killed, it is important that witnesses come forward and report any act of animal abuse to the police and the SPCA (call 62875355). This is vital in getting perpetrators prosecuted.
We thank Ms Shoba and all those kind folk who are taking on the responsibility of caring for stray cats in our environment, and for helping to reduce the number of animals being born. Without sterilisation taking place, there would be many more stray animals struggling to survive.
