Allow for exceptions to big-dog rule in flats
THE topic of keeping big dogs in Housing Board flats is not new.
However, I am disappointed to note that it has not been addressed.
I did some research on the Internet and found that many dog owners have been voicing their wishes online for HDB to be more flexible on its rule against keeping big dogs in flats.
This rule was established about 50 years ago, and has not been updated since then.
There are people who have no choice but to sell their private property and downgrade to an HDB flat when they are in dire straits – something which we will undoubtedly see more of during the recession.
However, no responsible and loving pet owner would be willing to give their pets up, even during bad times.
But being law-abiding citizens, these pet owners will not be able to take their big furry friends with them if official approval is not granted.
To my knowledge, town councils have to seek approval from the HDB for appeals to keep big dogs in flats.
Should an appeal be unsuccessful, the dog will have to be removed.
About 20 per cent of Singapore’s population lives in private property. If some have to downgrade to government housing, it would be unfair to them and their pets if they are unable
to keep them.
I understand HDB’s perspective on retaining the ruling against keeping big dogs.
I also understand that not everyone is a dog lover.
However, would HDB consider making some amendments to the ruling or allow for exemptions
