| 03-01-2018: Vodka’s not so good. About a month ago the vet found a growth between his eyeball & socket. Told us it’s incurable. So we giving eye drops. He was still all ok until 3 days ago. Not really eating. Sleep a lot. Sigh. |

Subject: Abuse of cats in the vicinity of your school
To Mr XXX, Principal, XXX Primary School
Dear Mr XX
My name is xxx and I moved into Blk xx, which is facing your school, last June.
A few months ago, I spoke to my neighbour, a lady in her 70s and she told me that before this estate underwent upgrading, she had reported to the SPCA about students from your school abusing cats and that some cats were strung from the trees. I had hope that this was a thing of the past, until a resident of Blk xx, JY, told me that he saw students from your school kicking a cat along the pathway directly opposite Blk xx, along the perimeter of your school, about a month ago.
This evening, I met another resident of Blk xx, M, who said that her father met an elderly lady who saw students from your school throwing stones at a cat. This was about a week ago and I believed a letter on this matter has been sent to you.
We believe that these students who abuse animals are just a small percentage of your school population but nonetheless they are a stain on the good record of your school.
We are concerned about children who abuse animals because of the association with family violence and criminal tendency in adulthood.
Hence we feel that it is necessary to identify these students for appropriate counselling and to prevent further hurt on these community cats.
2 weeks ago M saw this cat (seen below) with blood stain around his nose and around his belly.
Carol (of Blk xx) and I saw him a few days ago and we found that the hair on one side of his tail was shaved off so hard that the whole length of the curly tail was covered with a linear dry blood-scab. We also saw a non-united laceration over his belly, measuring about 2cm. These were intentionally inflicted by a razor blade.
We hope you will be able to broadcast this incidence during assembly and asked if there are witnesses to this cruel act.

he (Vodka) is fearless leh. but he’s also the most fun. when we have kids over, they love him to bits. i cut their nails though. cuz vodka likes to play. and we have kenah hurt many times. so we try to trim whenever we can. so that we stop having these scars all over our arms and legs.

A very friendly ginger and white “old” looking suddenly appeared at blk ***. He was very skinny and had some eczema. It was easy to get him into a carrier and so he ended at the clinic where he was sterilised on 11th July 2005.
Look at him now. Sleeping so soundly under a chair in the park between Blk ** and **, after a can of snappy tom.
We worried for him as he is overly friendly - an easy target for abusers!
He has put on a good amount of weight since he was sterilized and his eczema has cleared completely.
If only we have unlimited resources, we would surely bring him for fostering but he is “too old looking” and hence poor potential for rehoming.

Vodka is one of the friendliness in the neighbourhood. He is loved by many residents, including an elderly peranakan lady who will bring a towel to wipe his face. Yet sometime last year, some took advantage of his trusting nature and inflicted razor-blade nicks on the tummy and shaved off half-side of his curly tail. We suspected the culprits to be the primary school kids from a neighbourhood school. I wrote to the School Principal who responded by saying he would give a talk on animal cruelty during assembly.
A resident in the estate told me that he saw Vodka was seen licking a wound on his front leg this morning.
I decided to check him out on my way to the gym. I brought along a tube of Aloe Vera gel as well as a soft carrier. I found him in his favourite afternoon napping place.
I wanted to lift him out of the basket by his front legs. He meowed out in pain. There was wetness on his left front leg and I brought my hand to my nose. There was a slight foul odour, indication of bacterial infection. I stepped back and called to him. He jumped down on his own and I noticed a slight limp. I decided to bring him to the Vet.
The vet expressed out a few drops of synovial fluid from two puncture wounds, indicating the bite inflicted was deep and had penetrated into the joint space. The pus had drained from spontaneous rupture of the wound but the deep infection will need to be cleared with daily flushing and oral antibiotic. An antibiotic injected was given at the time of consultation. Vodka has to be admitted for care.

Vodka, the community cat whose tail’s fur was razor-ed off on one side and whose tummy was sliced with a 1.5cm cut, followed me to my block where I fed him a small tin of whiska. I couldn’t snap a photo of his tummy as he refused to “stand still” but got a shot of his tail.
