Dear supporter,

There's been a huge victory for seals! Thanks to the tireless efforts of members and supporters, PETA has scored a major victory for baby seals who have their heads bashed in or are shot for their skins in Canada's annual massacre on ice.

Following PETA Europe's campaign, in which more than 100,000 compassionate members and supporters urged their Members of European Parliament (MEP) to vote for a ban in the E.U. on seal fur products from Canada, the MEPs have voted in favor of seals, recognizing that these "hunts" can never be humane. The ban sends a resounding message to the Canadian government that this bloody massacre must stop once and for all and that the world will not stand by as baby seals are bludgeoned to death in front of their wailing mothers for a product that no one needs.

The world is demanding an end to the slaughter. But the massacre is not over, and seals still need your help.

All eyes are on Canada as it prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. Now is the time to demand that the Canadian government hear the worldwide call to stop this bloody massacre of seals.

Rome’s Street Cats Get a New Look

For the homeless street cats of Rome, tipped ears are becoming all the rage! A tipped ear means that the free-ranging cat has been spayed or neutered. As we know, this means less fighting and roaming, fewer cancers, fewer sickly kittens and, most important, a stabilization and eventual reduction of the homeless cat population.

For the last two and 1/2 years, Friends of Roman Cats has been helping bring about this new look. We have had a very successful partnership with Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary, providing money for a voucher program by which poor cat caretakers all over Rome cat bring their cats to an approved veterinarian to be spayed or neutered at little or no cost. We have also been supplying Torre Argentina as well as other cat refuges with humane cat traps that people can borrow to catch their cats to get them sterilized (see story below).

It is really paying off in Rome. Even cats on the outskirts of Rome are joining in. However a lot more needs to be done. Please send a donation to help us expand the voucher program, both in Rome and elsewhere in Italy, and give all Italian street cats a new look. Here's how.

There are many different kinds of families, but this is the story of one of the strangest and most wonderful ones I’ve ever met!

“Ahhh, vacation... There’s nothing like it,” Zorba thinks to himself, as he stands at the window overlooking the port of Hamburg, watching the boy and his familydrive away. “Four weeks, all to myself. Four weeks to be lord and master of the apartment, to lie in the sun, to do exactly as I please. Life is good.” At least that what the big, black, fat cat thinks his vacation will be like, but that’s only because he doesn’t have any idea of what is really going to happen to him and his friends.

He’s lying in the sun on the balcony when he hears the sound of a flying object approaching very quickly, and jumps to his feet just in time to avoid being hit by a very dirty seagull, her feathers covered with a dark, sticky, smelly substance. She was caught in an oil slick and used the very last of her energy to fly as far as Zorba’s balcony. Now near death, she begs Zorba to promise her three things before he goes to find someone to help her. First, he must not eat the egg she’s about to lay. Second, he must look after it until the chick hatches. And third, he must teach the chick to fly. Zorba’s sure that she’s delirious, but promises anyway, and runs off to find his best friends, Secretario, the Colonel, and Einstein, who he hopes will help him save the gull. But when they return to the balcony, they discover that they’re too late. The gull is dead, but she’s left behind a small, round, blue and white speckled egg, just as she’d said she would. That’s when Zorba realizes that the gull hadn’t been delirious at all, and that he did indeed give his word to her, and the word of one cat of the port is the word of all cats of the port. He must care for the egg and teach the chick to fly. The others will help him.

But taking care of an egg, keeping it warm and safe, is one thing, and it’s something else entirely to raise a chick and teach it to fly! Besides, how will he feed it? Birds don’t eat cat food! And cats don’t fly. How can Zorba teach the chick to do something he can’t do himself? What is a bachelor cat going to do with a tiny seagull chick who takes one look at him and says, “Hello, Mommy! I’m hungry!”

Dogs of Peace

Shot in Afghanistan during the first nine months following the fall of the Taliban, Dogs of Peace is a documentary that promotes understanding of the terrors and hardships faced by the people of Afghanistan at that time.

This is he story of the Afghan men and their dogs of the Mine Detection Squad who put their lives on the line every day as the search out the ten million land mines that infest Afghanistan.

The special is hosted by Heather Mills-McCartney who is a strong anti land mine activist.
